In Italy gay unions don't legally exist, but next Saturday in my town the soap comany Lush is organizing an event where they will be celebrating gay unions in the middle of the main shopping street. Unions will be symbolic of course, but it still seems a pretty big thing to me. A dear friend is going to (unofficially) marry her gf and I'm going to be the (unofficial) maid of honour for the (unofficial) bride. (unofficial) yay!

I heard about this event a few weeks ago, to me it sounds like a nice but useless initiative, given the culture we live in :( Anyway, (unofficial) congratulations to your friend on her (unofficial) union :D

At Torino's gay pride last week, some local politicians had a stand where they celebrated symbolic civil gay unions. Some silly friends of mine, a group of gay videomakers called Badhole, joined the parade with this truck:

the sign says: "Badhole look ahead. Here you can divorce!"

Gay Marriage

Postby jessica.melrose » Thu Jul 05, 2012 2:39 am

McCain spoke at my college graduation. Let's just say he told us all that he got "d's" in college and look where he is today. Nothing that leaves that man's mouth makes sense. I get that college isn't necessarily necessary for everyone but obviously it is for college grads, ya dummy, at least make them believe their last years in school were meaningful. Worst keynote speaker ever. My friend at chapel hill got Bill Cosby and we at the u of Arizona got McCain. Poop indeed.

And who gets hurt when gays get married? Jesus? Okay so let's see if jesus cares enough to deal with it later then.., and by the way college grads can't find jobs and good teachers get paid peanuts and bad ones can't get fired and NCLB...and then there's meth...but those GAYS!!! (sarcasm)

JessicaMelrose, you've got a great point. I can't wrap my brain around why people become so passionate and angry about gay marriage if it does not pertain to their personal lives. If you don't like gay marriage, don't have one. I'm having a hard time understanding this notion that it's ok and acceptable to vote against a basic civil right.

Looking back through the forum for wedding ideas and found this. Anyone want to join us for chickens (but they don't fly far) and pig petting? Nothing but the best from the people who brought you Midwest Diva Stretchy Pants... \:D/

MOST fun we've had all week! Thanks, snowshoe!!!

That was beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm not one to get emotional over stuff like that but those photos brought tears to my eyes.

On Sept 12 the European Parliament has approved marriage equality with 308 against 229 votes. Now all the nations members of UE are supposed to change their laws in conformity to this decision, but I'm afraid it will be not that easy, especially in Italy. But it's a very good step forward anyway!
Meanwhile, yesterday the Italian websites were full of photographs of the Pope welcoming in Rome and blessing the ambassady from Uganda, here to promote a law that would recognize "sexual deviance" as mental illness in Uganda, and legalize death penalty for gay people who can't get "healed". Guess no good news come without a bad one. The law proposal will be discussed tomorrow.

In France, on dec 15 manifestations for Equality Marriage in some french towns
Tomorrow on dec 16, the national manifestation for Equality Marriage in Paris.

My GF and I we are going tomorrow. We just hope that it will not rain on dec 16.
Today at 6:00 PM, it`s hardly raining in Paris.

About the debate, I looked on the blog of the american actress Jill Bennett ( LA, CA ) 5 years ago.

Jill Bennett and her neighbor phil, debate on whether or not gay marriage should be legalized. This was filmed prior to the disappointing outcome of the Proposition 8 vote in California.

Watch Jill Bennett's new vlog called The Violet Underground and many others at Shewired.com under the video section.

Richard Adams died December 17, at age 65, in the home he shared with his partner of 43 years, Tony Sullivan. The two men were granted a marriage license by Clela Rorex, a county clerk, in Boulder, Colorado; who, after learning that there was nothing in state law that forbade it...granted it. They were the first of six couples to be granted a marriage license before the state's attorney general ordered Rorex to stop giving them to gay couples. After putting in an application for permanent U.S. residence for Sullivan [who was an Australian citizen], they received a shocking one-sentence denial from the INS: "You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots."

This happened in 1975.

What's with France?

When I told my teenage son about the huge protest, in France, the other day, he was really surprised. "Wow," he said incredulously, as he laid on the couch playing his xbox, "You'd think that a country that's been around for such a long time, like France, would've evolved by now." I thought that was a pretty good question. Hopefully, it's just the last desperate gasp of a crumbling, intolerant political group.

^ I hate what's happened and any kind of march should never lead to this violent.
Mark, I think it's the opposite, when you have Centuries of history and laws behind and most of all, of Catholic Church influence, it is very hard to change people's mind. Some conservative people can get very extreme. Also here in Italy we have all the nuances of the political spectrum, including on its very right conservative and fierce people who even proclaim themselves as fascists. It will be a long battle especially cause many politicians are so oldminded. But I feel it's growing!

It's in the news that same-sex unions have been approved by the Senate in France. Now ALL of our neighbors - Switzerland, France, Austria, Slovenia - are way ahead of Italy. And we don't even have a government right now... :(
