Anthony Weiner is resigning. I was chatting with someone today who insisted that the congressman did nothing wrong. Yes, she did indeed say that. I don't think she's turned on the television lately. :?

Casey Anthony was found not guilty!

I'm not going to make a judgment one way or the other because I don't have all the facts, but I was surprised. We all gathered around the TV to hear the verdict--it reminded me of the OJ Simpson trial!

^^^ I wasn't really surprised. There was a lot stacked against her, but most of it was circumstantial.

Whoa, Amy Winehouse is dead!

I honestly can't say I'm too surprised, but it's still a really sad situation.

It's shocking how quickly her death took over the news almost ignoring what happened in Norway just 24 prior to her death

Feel the same way, Marina.

The tragedy in Norway still leaves me boggled...almost as much as the fact that Amy Winehouse's death seems to be what people are talking most about.

It's our country's obsession with pop culture. I'm pretty sure it's incurable...

I can't stop thinking about Norway...I almost don't want to read any more articles about it because it's so sad. But yeah, Amy rocketed straight to the headline article on every news page even while the Norway story was still developing. Can't say I'm surprised by that, though. :?

We thought there had been some sort of explosion at first...took a few hours for me to calm down, but at least I got to go home early!!

I felt it up here in MA! It was the weirdest feeling- I felt like I was moving involuntarily, but it was so subtle I didn't quite believe it and thought maybe I was getting sick or something. Bizarre.

How are the East Coast ATers doing re: Hurricane Irene? We weathered the storm with very little damage - basement is damp and we noticed a dripping leak from one of our skylights. We never lost power last night, but did have several tornado warnings to contend with. Feeling quite grateful this morning - only got a couple hours sleep.

Hope ATers in New England hunker down and ride out the storm with little damage/issues.

All is well in my part of Manhattan - I totally slept through the whole thing! Its just lightly raining now, planning to explore the neighborhood later to scope out any damage!

Yeah, everything's good on my end (although I still need to go outside and make sure no tree branches fell on my car). I still can't believe I didn't lose power. My apartment complex loses power every time there's a tiny little thunderstorm, but it can weather a hurricane with no problems? :-s Seriously, though, I feel very lucky.

We're in the middle of it now. So far there are just a lot of branches and limbs down. It freaks me out a little. There are a lot of 100+ year old trees around our property and they are definitely moving around a lot. We also have a freaked out foster dog and a nervous four-year-old. Methinks I did not get enough booze to get through the day. :)

I'm okay in my area, but i'm 2 hours away from the coast. i know there was a lot of damage down there, including my favorite pier collapsing. I was on the interstate today and passed a FEMA truck, about 5 power trucks, and 3 disaster relief vans. i'm sure they were headed to the coast.

Well written letter written by Anderson Cooper.

^^^I also thought the letter was very well-written!

I can't believe it's been 11 years since 9/11 shocked our nation and sent so many lives into turmoil. I was on the school bus when I heard the news, but didn't believe it until I got to first period drama, where my teacher had the TV on and turned to the news. The halls of my high school were dead quiet that day.

I read in the news yesterday that 50 different kinds of cancer have been added to the list of health problems caused by 9/11 that are covered by the federal government under the Zadroga Act...over 400 people who were on site that day have died from various forms of cancer since then. I think we're going to feel the ripple effect of this tragedy for years and years to come...
