Gay Marriage

Here you can post about what ever you like. The book you read last week, your favorite film, the crappy day you had at work, etc.

This is sort of related, sort of not, but I hope some of you might find it interesting.

Last night on telly in the UK there was a documentary about two guys who had created their own family using their sperm, donor eggs and surrogate carriers in the US. They had twins just over ten years ago - and at the time this was major major news. The UK didn't have civil partnerships yet, there was a huge furore that it was 'against nature' and so on and so forth.

In the intervening ten years, they've had another three child this way, and the the documentary was looking at their 'weird and wonderful' family. And the best thing about it was that apart from them being extremely successful and financially well off - which is how they've afforded to be ablt to do all this - their family was not weird in any way, it was just wonderful. The kids - apart from being a bit spoilt - were really well adjusted and articulate about their feelings, obviously loved, brought up with good values and had great attitudes.

And for me, the most interesting thing was that they showed an archive interview from ten years ago with the dads and the babies - it was on a breakfast show equivalent to GMA or similar. And the views and questioning of the presenter at the time would be considered absolutely archaic and offensive now. There would be a complete outcry. And they went back last year and were interviewed again with the whole brood - and the presenter ate his words. It was a really good example of how views and attitudes have changed over the last decade for the better.

I don't know if you guys in the US will be able to see it, but there's a link to the programme here which you might be able to watch.

There's a review from the Independent here too, which probably explains it better.

The trouble with rounded personalities is that they don't tessellate.

A lot of it comes down to being honest with those around you. My dad's views on the topic has DRASTICALLY changed since I came out. I wish I could say the same for my brother's girlfriend. She doesn't believe I should have the right to marry.

^^^ that's totally true. Before I came out my family had very strong opinions about homosexuality. The number of homophobic comments and jokes were almost unbearable, but when I came out that stopped pretty quickly. My mom isn't about to go march in a PFLAG event, but she's definitely more accepting of homosexuality and even "finds it disgusting" when the GLBQTT community is denied equal rights.

Right on.

And F*O - that 22% is up 10% and almost double what it was 15 years ago.. which is better than a kick in the nuts :]. It might take time, but it's happening.

Hmm, kinda wish I lived in Massachussetts.

I honestly think same-sex marriage will become legal nationwide. It's just going to take time (hopefully less than ten years).

Join us. I hope you are right about it becoming nationwide, but I am beyond grateful to be living somewhere that is beyond supportive of gay marriage.

I want to get married in MA. Already got the place(s) picked out. Rowes Wharf (where I used to go to think when I lived in Boston) or Montgomery Park (across the street from my old residence). You actually have to live in a building that touches Montgomery Park to use it but I keep dreaming it'll happen.
